DESCRIPTION OF NAVA NAATHAS
[Chapter 32 of Sripada Sri Vallabha Divya Charitamrutham (Sampurnam)]
After touching the divine Feet of Sripada Sri Vallabha, Shankar Bhattu asked. Great Lord! I heard that there are great Siddha Yogis named as Nava Naathas and that they are quasi incarnations of Lord Datta. Sri Charan, benevolently make clear to me about them.
On hearing the name of Nava Naathas, I noticed that ambrosial looks which emanated from the eyes of Srivallabha onto the external creation. I apparently felt the consciousness of love shown by a mother cow on its young calf in His looks. He was contented and said this way.
“Dear ones! Matschyendra, Gorakshaka, Jaalandhara, Gahani, Adhabanga, Chouranga, Bhartaree, Charpata and Naaganaatha are Nava Naathas. Mere remembrance of them bestows fortunate results. The grace of Lord Datta would definitely be on those who remember the names of Nava Naathas.
Before the commencement of Kali yuga, few years ago,Sri Krishna surrounded by great devotees like Uddhava and all Yadavas recollected about Nava Narayanas who were now called Nava Naathas. The King Rushabha had one hundred sons. Amongst them, nine ones who were having the Narayana amsa were called Nava Narayanas. Their names are 1. Kavi – Matschyendranath 2. Hari – Gorakshaka 3 Antarishudu – Jaalandhara 4. Prabhuddhudu – Kaaneepha 5. Pippalayanudu – Charpatadu 6. Aavirhot – Naaganatha
7. Drumeeludu – Bhartareenatha 8. Chamasudu – Revanatha and 9.Karabhajanudu – Gahaaninath. All these are Siddha purushas who attained the state of avadhootas. Owing to My order and to comply with the promise made in the Krishna incarnation and also to conduct the mission of establishing dharma, they were born on this earth as Nava Naathas. Kavi was born as Matcheyndranth. Hari was born as a disciple of Matschendranath under the name of Gorakshaka. Antariksha was born as Jaalandhara and Prabhuddha as his disciple under the name of Kaanifa. Pippalayana was born as Charbhata. Aavirhotra was born as Nageswanaadha. Drumeela under the name Bhartarinaadha, Chamasa under the name of Revana Naadha were born. Karabhajan was born under the name of Gahaninaadha.
At the beginning of the creation, due to some reason the semen of Brahma fell. Vyaasa Maharashi inscribed in Bhavishya Puraana that many sages would be born in many places from the semen.
There was one vasuvu called Uparichara . He was fascinated towards Urvasi. His sperm leaked and fell into the Yamuna River. A fish drank it. From that fish, Matschendranth was born. Shiva burnt cupid into ashes with the fire from His forehead and the soul of cupid was lying in a subtle form in those ashes. A King named Bruhadradha was performing a yagna, while Jaalandharanath emerged from the fire altar of that sacrifice. From the semen of Brahma that fell into the Reva or Narmada River, Revana Siddha was born. Some sperm of Brahma fell on the hood of a snake. Thinking it as a food item, the snake ate it and became pregnant. Janameyjaya was performing ‘sarpa yaga’. A sage by name Asthika saved this great serpent from destruction and hid that serpent fairy Padmini, daughter of Takshaka in the hole of a big Oudumbara tree. From this embryo formed, Aavirohotrudu had to be born. Leaving the embryo in the hollow of that oudumbara tree, Takshaka’s daughter left for her native place. Under the title Vata Siddha Naganadha, Aavirohotrudu emerged. Matschendranath while wandering about in the country gave holy ash charged with mantra to a childless woman. As she had no faith, she threw that ash into the heap of debris. The holy ash having great power in it, Gorakshanadh emerged from that. Brahma who officiated as the priest for the marriage ceremony of Paravathi got distracted by her beauty which resulted in leaking of His semen. He was ashamed and hiding it from all, he rubbed that semen with the heel of his leg, it became 60 thousand parts and from them 60 thousand sages called Vaalakhilyas were born. There was still some part of it left which turned into waste and fell into the river Bhagiradhi. It slowly moved into the grassy shrub in the river bank and was stuck there. The soul of Pippalayana entered into that and a Nava Naadha by name Charpatanaath was born. A sage named Kaushika while going from his Parnasala for collecting alms kept the begging bowl outside the Parnasala. At that same time, the sperm of Sun dropped into it. The Maharishi who noticed this preserved it there. Bharthari means begging bowl, as he was born from that bowl, was called as Bhartharinath. In a dense forest of the Himalaya Mountains, a big elephant was sleeping. Lord Brahma was besotted with infatuation looking at Saraswati which resulted in leaking of His sperm and opportunely it fell into the ear of that elephant. From that Prabhuddha took life and as he was born out of the ear of the elephant, he became famous beneath the name Karna Kaanifa as one amongst the Nava Naaadhas. Goraksha chanting the Sanjeevini mantra made a clay human image. Owing to the effectiveness of the Sanjeevini mantra, Karabhajana came to life from that image and was named as Gahaninaadha. By order of Sri Krishna, these Nava Krishnas (Nava Narayanas) preserved their gross bodies (in Samadhi) in the Mandhara Mountain and with all their potencies as Nava Naathas incarnated on the earth and partook in the establishment of dharma.
Then I inquired,”Guru Saarvabhowma,Victory and Victory unto you. You said that incarnation of Nava Naathas were the quasi incarnations of Nava Krishnas. Oh Lord! Is there any difference between Nava Krishnas and Nava Naathas.”
Sripada with a charismatic smile looked at us graciously with divine love. He asserted, “Dear ones! I am the great ‘Sankalpa’ (power) for all this creation! All the Sankalpas of Gods and Goddesses are only the tiny parts of My great resolve. The intentions of these tiny parts will have independence to a limited extent. A cultivator ties a cow to a tree. It is tied up with a long rope. The cow can graze only up to the distance allowable by the rope. It means that the cow has a determined limited space in which it can graze. It can graze freely in the zone of freedom granted to it. If it has to cross those limits for grazing it must inevitably have the permission of the farmer. When the fodder at that particular place is over then the farmer should either tie it to another tree or lengthen the rope if it is retained at the same tree. Similarly, as per certain norms of dharma and karma, the quasi incarnations will be granted independence. Hence, the resolve originates from the prime nature. The accountability of implementing this would be delegated to the part incarnations. If any problem pops up, these fractioned incarnations put forward those intricacies to the prime phenomenon. They bring about the grace from the origin, i.e., the prime phenomenon in the interests of living beings. As these fractional incarnations do not possess the qualities like lust, hate, arrogance etc., they are capable of performing all the activities that the prime nature (moola tatwam) is capable of. Therefore, as far as living beings are concerned, there is no difference between the incarnations, be it is a complete incarnation or a quasi incarnation.
